Despite proficiency in class, language immersion students’ willingness to communicate often drops dramatically in real-world settings. Open Badges provide a framework for validating and encouraging authentic language use. This session presents a pilot study at a Spanish immersion school, detailing the development of a badge system that connects students with their communities, personalizes learning, and expands language use through experiential learning.
