This presentation explores the development and evolution of micro-credentials at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT). It examines SAIT's journey from launching over 120 micro-credentials in 2021 to adopting a Product-led approach in response to market feedback. The study highlights SAIT's innovative strategies, including a classification system for different skill types and an assessment-first approach. These methods aim to create industry-aligned, customer-focused micro-credentials that effectively bridge skills gaps. A key innovation in our micro-credential definition and classification is the clear and direct connection made between skill attainment and validation and badging to prove such. SAIT's micro-credential governance requires that any badge issued for a micro-credential is based on a workplace authentic assessment that measures the skill identified through a robust assessment process that validates skill attainment through real world examples, scenarios, case studies, and workplace applications. The presentation also discusses the challenges faced, lessons learned, and the potential of micro-credentials in creating flexible learning pathways for reskilling and upskilling in the modern workforce.
